I’m going to tell you about Capoeira, which art. Of combat I have been training from 10 months. In June I will take an exam to the first grade – in Capoeira it calls corda (from Portuguese – cord).

Although Capoeira can be called as well a art of fight, as a dance, or a  lifestyle, very important is here a motive of game – jogo. It is a battle, where capoeiristas (people training Capoeira) are trying to cheat each other, break the defense of the opponent. Attack are usually kicks, defense – various acrobatics or dodges.

The place of a game is a circle – roda, which create other Capoeira players. The rhythm of a game give people playing on berimbau – an characteristic for Capoeira instrument, pandeiro – a tambourine or atabaque – a drum; but also other, singing a traditional Capoeira songs. There are 3 types of these melodies, they differ principally from length and arrangement of stanzas – ladainha, quadras and corridos. Other people in roda applaud to the rhythm and sing refrains, simultaneous observing the game.

Roda is a specific doping for players, gives them energy and feel, that they aren’t only participants of this game.

Contestant could be change, if somebody from roda “buy” the game. Constant change of players gives a lot of variety. The main step – ginga is a perfect example for philosophy of Capoeira – lets every time be in move, change the place of stand. Negativa is a evade by ground and au is our “star”.

Philosophy malandro tells, that “brain is more, than strength”, everybody could be conquered with a trick. In Capoeira more important, than a power are smartness, unpredictability and speed. Defense must be an answer to the attack, the gamer should every time observe the opponent. In the other case may happen a surprise.

Capoeira comes from Brasil, but its culture origin is in Africa. Thence since XVI century had Portugal colonists bring slave (Indians were too weak or died from overworking). Cultures of different tribes mixed themselves. Dances and fights were elements of tradition. Therefrom could Capoeira come down, but its precise genesis is unknown. Capoeira united slaves. Under the pretext of dance, learnt their a fight, gave them awareness of nationality.

Since 1814 Capoeira had prohibited. King of Portugal Dom Joao VI escaped to Brasil from Napoleon. He wanted to deprive slaves the culture. Though it, they trained it in various forms. In Rio Capoeira were very brutal, in Bahia more ritual.

In 1888 with a Golden Act bondage were annulled. Capoeiristas became criminals and Capoeira their realm. With first Constitution in 1892 Capoeira were official forbidden.

In begin of XX century appeared two very important for Capoeira characters – Mestre Bimba (properly  Manuel dos Reis Machado) and Mestre Pastinha (Vincente Ferreira Pastinha). In 1932 Bimba opened first academy of Capoeira, in Salvador da Bahia. He began popularize it as a national sport of Brasil. In 1941 Pastinha opened school of Capoeira Angola. Angola was more ritual, than based on fight Capoeira Regional by Bimba.

Art of Bimba were very famous, but because of absence of help from government, he moved to Goiana. There he died in 1974, and were active to the last day of  his life.

In 60-s risen in Rio a new variant of Capoeira – Senzala. It brought a lot of new, for example a system of cords – from the first – green (for beginners), trough red – for teachers, to a white – for masters. In 70-s arouse an idea of Capoeira competition, but the most of players adjudged, that is it conflicting with a philosophy of Capoeira, so never became popular.

In 80-s Capoeira overstepped Brazil. In this time many masters of Angola acknowledged, that values, which had Capoeira were lost. They reduced activities, but more modern Regional and Senzala earned a fame. Freshly in 1985 Angola rose again and Capoeira could grow up on the world.
